Dear Friends,

I have a few sex related requests that I need you to fulfill. Namely, I want to see what you have to say about sex – the good and the bad. Have you had a great experience you would like to write about? Do you have an opinion about birth control or sex education in public schools?…

A Discussion On Public Health

thevaginazine:

“If you claim you’re not a feminist, you should stop using birth control, and why don’t you get me a sandwich while you’re at it?” –Guli Fager

In late May, I had the opportunity to speak with healthy sexuality expert, Guli Fager, author of the award winning blog How to Have Sex in Texas and graduate from a Public Health Masters program in Sexuality and Health at Columbia University. She spoke with me about many issues, including condom use, gender relations, STD prevalence, and the U.S. presidential elections. As a professional, she aims to create a safe space for youth to discuss sex and to prevent STDs and pregnancy from prohibiting academic and professional success.

How do we have sex in Texas? If anyone has the answer, it’s Guli. She gathers and analyzes data that show STD prevalence and pregnancy rates. Then, she tries to encourage our state towards healthy sexuality through a primary, secondary, and tertiary health program. On the primary level, she aims to prevent diseases before they occur and therefore she distributes thousands of condoms every year. Additionally, she trains students to facilitate conversations about sex with their peers. According to her, the conversations are “the most important thing” because “the ability to have these types of conversations with your partner is actually the strongest indicator that bad things won’t happen.” Guli explained that the secondary level in public health includes screening individuals who may be at risk to find early signs of disease and treat patients faster. Specifically, she organizes events for free STI testing and methods of contraception classes for students who already engage in sex. The tertiary phase provides one-on-one counseling for those who are dealing with sex-related health issues that interfere with a students’ academic success.

Guli attempts to provide sexual health services and advice for all sexual orientations, an essential difference in her work from some other healthy sexuality public health professionals. Additionally, she wants to create a safe space for anyone to discuss sexuality and encourages public celebration of healthy sexuality. She complained that if someone posts a status on Facebook saying they quit smoking, they would receive a public display of support. However, if someone posts that they were tested for STDs, people consider the status as too much personal information. Yearly STD testing, she claims, is as healthy and essential as not smoking. Therefore, by normalizing and celebrating conversations about sex, she hopes to encourage safe practices and to raise public awareness.

I am unabashedly a virgin. When some friends learn that I’ve never had sex, they’re confused. “But what about that one time?” “Or that one guy?” “Seriously though?” “Why?” They act like I’m a unicorn and they’ve got just the boy to break me in. But when other friends learn that I’m barely hanging on to the last shreds of my V-card, they’re disappointed in me. They lecture me, they pray for me, they hope I’ll come to my senses. It’s the case of the virgin-whore. I’m not one or the other; I’m an anomaly and an abomination to all concerned parties.

Boys try to take my virginity, like it’s all just game of Capture The Flag with a stellar trophy for the winner. They have their game plans and strategies but don’t always play by the rules. And when I call foul they toss their arms up and shake their heads in frustration and/or confusion, but rarely in remorse. One boyfriend went so far as to sleep with my then-best friend when I repeatedly refused to have sex with him. Another time I was told, “I’d never leave you if you’d just have sex with me”. Oh my, how romantic. They’ve tried to convince me, tried to coerce me, even tried to force themselves on me. I don’t see my virginity as a problem that needs to be fixed. It’s my choice, plain and simple. It is, after all, my vagina.

Full disclosure: I may have been saving that headline for a while. But back on topic! Vagina now has a sex editor. Her name is Basia and we are so excited to have her on the team. The babe had this to say about being a sex editor:

Sex is hard, wet, awkward, funny, boring, exciting,…
